Founded on the slopes of the legendary volcano Mount Epomeo
in the Mediterranean in 2008 at the Festivale di Musica da
Camera d'Ischia in Italy, Ensemble Epomeo consists of three
virtuosi dedicated to the expansion of the string trio repertoire and
exciting, innovative and engaging performance approaches. Their
inaugural tours saw them performing in Italy, the UK and the USA,
with performance at the Newburyport and Ischia festivals, and
broadcasts on New England Public Radio and WKCR Columbia
University in New York, where they were the subject of a 3 hour
special showcase concert.
The members of Ensemble Epomeo bring to the group a
combined wealth of experience as members of professional
chamber ensembles across the US and Europe, with expertise in
contemporary music, classical performance practice and
improvisation. They have all held a number of prestigious
professional teaching and performing positions and been
recipients of a wide variety of fellowships and awards.
Ensemble Epomeo are focused on presenting great works of the
chamber music literature in a diverse range of performing venues
and program styles. Their intent is always to take seriously the
music and their audience, but not themselves. They present
thematic concerts such as their "Remembrance" concert,
featuring some of the great works composed at the Terezin
interment camp, "tapas concerts" focusing on a wide selection of
short pieces and single movements and "focus" concerts, such as
an evening of all the Beethoven op 9 String Trios, the pinnacle of
the string trio literature.
In addition to performing both the mainstays of the trio literature
and lesser known works for trio, Ensemble Epomeo have a broad
range of artistic partners, including leading pianists, clarinetists
and string players from elite quartets and orchestras around the
world. In collaboration with these colleagues, Ensemble Epomeo
regularly perform works from the literature for piano quartet, string
quintet and sextet, clarinet quintet, oboe quartet and on and on.
All three members of Ensemble Epomeo have a long background
in programming for young audiences. Violist David Yang is the
founder of the musical sortytelling group Auricolae, with whom he
performs as narrator accross the country. Violinist Caroline Chin
directs a busy schedule of chamber music outreach projects in
Queens, New York, while cellist Kenneth Woods experience with
young audiences includes not only hundreds of chamber concerts
and workshops for young people, but 10 years experience leading
young people's concerts as a conductor. Ken also held the
prestigious National Endowment for the Arts Rural Residency
fellowship which entailed a broad range of outreach programs in
the Mississippi Delta region. As Ensemble Epomeo, Caroline,
David and Ken offer engaging and enlightening educational
concerts and witty and fast paced afternoons of musical
storytelling for young people.
Each spring, the members of Ensemble Epomeo return to their
home base at the Ischia Chamber Music Festival, where they
serve as Ensemble in Residence.
